Les LyeYou may not know the name, but if you were a pre-teen in the 80′s and had cable, you certainly know the face. Or if you’re a resident of Canada maybe you are familiar with this great entertainer’s voice and writing talent.

But for me, Les Lye will always be the folly of many foils as pretty much the only adult (aside from the one lady) cast member of Nickelodeon’s “You Can’t Do That On Television.” What else is there to say? I haven’t thought about the guy in years, but when I ran across this news today I have to admit it was a bit of a blow. Staple is maybe too strong of a word, but his passing has certainly brought a lot of memories flooding back. He will be missed.

Rest in peace sir! And thanks for the bundles of laughs and fond fond memories…

Lunar SurfaceWithout getting into all of the technical jargon and numbers, this is simply put, the largest and most detailed image of the moon taken from Earth ever created. So awesome is this photo that you can actually virtually cruise all over the surface and if there were people living there, you would be able to see them having a BBQ in their backyards.

The aim was to image the Moon at very high focal lengths using high frame-rate planetary cameras attached to numerous large amateur telescopes. Each telescope would take an image of a small section of the lunar surface at high resolution and these would be assembled, like a giant jigsaw puzzle, into a complete image of the 9-day old Moon. The mission was successful; so successful in fact that the image made the annals of Guinness’ Book of World Records. Hop over at take a peek.

Jay Bennett

2009

Unbelievably sad news to report tonight as former Wilco multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett has passed away. Jay was a very influential player in taking Wilco from their early days in the Alt-Country scene and helping transform them in to a highly respected and critically acclaimed American band. I was lucky enough to be at the First Avenue show featured in the “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” documentary. He was a remarkable presence on stage and he will be missed. He was only 45 years old.
