We’re only about an hour from Apple’s big “unveiling.” Early reports are it’s the gadget of the year… maybe of the decade. Follow the up to the minute Live blog with The Times.

    I WANT ONE.

Putting it on my Christmas list.

Admittedly it’s cool and I want one, but at the end of the day it is just a big iPhone.

True. But a big iPhone that can run office apps, has more space for better rendering of ebooks, video, web pages, games, etc. I’ve been using my iPhone for reading and watching video, especially on trips, for a while now, but it would be so much better if the screen were bigger. Voila.

It’s funny reading around the ‘net on this. The non-Apple people are all going “It’s just a big iPod Touch, what’s the big deal” and the Apple people are all going “OMG, it’s a big iPod Touch, that’s awesome!”

Lots of Apple hype as always, but this does look like something I could get lost in for a while. It’ll be an interesting thing to follow to see if it lives up to the hype.

No Chrome, no photoshop, no audacity, no tweetdeck.

Can’t look at half the net because of no flash plugin.

    No thanks.

I agree no Flash is a pain. But hopefully this will speed up web support for HTML5 instead of Flash. YouTube and Vimeo are already moving to HTML5.

Seems like everyone who was expecting this to be a mini-Macbook is angry, but everyone (like me) who wanted a multimedia consumption device with a decent-sized screen is happy. I’ve been saying for years that when ebook readers had color, didn’t have the eInk refresh blink, and supported video and audio playback in a sleek package, I’d be in the market for one. This is that device. That said, I’ll probably wait for Gen2 in hopes it’ll add a camera.

I think this says it best:

Done to death I know, but this one is still pretty funny.

no flash? are you kidding me? i’m an apple guy myself, but this hasn’t lived up for the hype, at least from what we know so far. too expensive, not powerful enough. I’ll take a laptop any day of the week over this. it’s not a game changer like they were hyping it.

this is a massive piece of shit. if you want one you are a first grade fool and deserve to be parted from your cash.

Goon – why? What should I get instead to have decent-sized video playback, web browsing of almost every site I look at (I probably hit the no-Flash issue 1% of the time I browse on my iPhone), portable touch gaming where I don’t end up covering the whole screen with my thumbs just trying to control the thing, and full-color graphical ebook support, all without the bulk of a folding/full-keyboard computer? It may not be right for you, but it has a niche that it’s right for.

I can defer you to something like this

    http://i.gizmodo.com/5458382/8-things-that-suck-about-the-ipad

but for me specifically the second I heard “No Multitasking” it was over, and anyone who thinks they can deal with that is kidding themselves.

Decent video playback? Its not even widescreen.

Seriously, I’m no reactionary Mac hater per se however the developers of this thing clearly either didn’t know what they were doing, or rely very heavily on the gullibility of its iChurch members and the sleek cool factor.

And of course hoping if they can rush one out and get people buying, an Apple device like this will be the one everyone goes to instead of an actual better product.

Like, a year ago I had to get a new mp3 player. I had used iTunes for a good while, but I did my research, and I decided on a Zune. I am ridiculously happy I did, the interface is superior, the screen is better, the actual web program is so much better (and actually surprisingly way more fun) than iTunes and perfect for people like me who customize a lot of albums.

Basically, I think Apple make very good computers for graphics programs, and that almost everything else they’ve produced ranges between overpriced gimmicky crap (iPhone) and absolute horseshit (iPad).

Its insulting to see anyone think of the iPad as a serious purchase, let alone ‘revolutionary’.

I’ve read plenty of the iPad sucks articles, no worries.

I’ve dealt with no multitasking on the iPhone for over a year, and honestly, it doesn’t bother me that much. A lot of apps remember the state they were in when you closed them, so when you switch back, it’s not a hassle. Since I jailbroke my iPhone, I have the backgrounding app, which lets you multitask, and seriously, the only thing I’ve ever used it for was to run Slacker Radio in the background while I websurf. Since I use music from my iPod (which Apple automatically backgrounds) most of the time instead of internet radio, I haven’t even done that too much. Certainly not enough that I’d miss it if I didn’t have it anymore.

I’ve tried to use Windows Media Player or Zune software before, and I can’t stand it. Give me iTunes any day. I realize a lot of people don’t like iTunes, and that’s fine, but I have the same sort of animosity towards Windows programs. I simply don’t like the interface. (Xbox360 is the only exception.) Now, I haven’t used the Zune itself, so I can’t comment on that.

And the screen isn’t widescreen? Okay, where’s the comparable device that is? Again, I’m not saying the iPad is for everyone, and not everyone should buy one. Heck, I even said I wasn’t going to buy this version of it, because just like each iteration of the iPhone has gotten better (added 3G support, added GPS, added compass, added video support), I think the iPad will too. Or maybe Google will come out with a competitor that I like better. What I’m saying is that RIGHT NOW, the iPad is the closest product I’ve seen to the mythical media consumption device that I’ve been carrying around in my head since I read SNOW CRASH. I don’t want it to replace my computer. I have a computer for that. I want it to be a TV/library I can carry around with me.

Star Trek has been using iPad’s (er…tablet computers) for years and the ipad looks pretty close.
