While they have only officially been around for less than a year, Radio Empire – comprised of two members of the now defunct Stillframe Sky – has made quite the ruckus in the northwestern Pennsylvania music scene after their multi-state tour this past summer. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing these guys rock out in concert twice now and they put on a real energetic live performance, with the 23-year-old lead vocalist and guitarist Tyler James having quite charming and crowd-pleasing interactions with the crowd.

Check out their MySpace with tons more of their music right here and while they have an EP already available for purchase for $5, look for a full-length album with new material in 2010. Here’s a live concert video for one of the band’s more mellow songs, “Dress to Impress.”

If RADIO EMPIRE is seated on the throne, I am loathed to be entertained by the “Erie Music Scene”. “Charming” lyrics and a bit of tambourine trippin’ charisma may be crowd pleasing, but doesn’t make up for weak vocal stylings and cliche chord progressions. The band seems to be diggin’ on PANIC! AT THE DISCO, but with a SIMPLE PLAN sound. Regardless of their ability to interact with a crowd and although I’ve not seen them live myself, it seems the studio cuts best reveal their musical talent. Currently, RADIO EMPIRE may conquer a corner of the college scene and gather a following of loyal subjects, but lacks the edge (and killa song titles) of bands like P!ATD. Potential and an obvious passion for sharing the sounds they’re making is what this band has going for them. A musically mature concept of themselves is what needs to be developed, and that takes time.(They also may need to dethrone a much tighter, but rather unknown, Australian band by the same name).

Radio Empire provides the fresh talent and charisma that is needed in western PA. Their new album comes out next month and it couldn’t have hit at a better time. They now have a following in New Castle, PA and are also doing a release show there as well as in hometown, Erie, PA. The vocal stylings of Tyler James are remarkable and have been found to remind some of Motion City Soundtrack. Their music continues to mature and progress as well as the members, all of which are just honestly nice guys. So come out to a show and don’t be afraid to say hello. I’m sure they’d love talk to you.
