Metric’s new album Fantasies drops in a few weeks (April 14th on disc, March 31st digitally, which you can sign up for on their website), and the first few songs are starting to show up. Here’s the video for “Gimme Sympathy,” which is not only a cool song, but the video is done in ONE TAKE. With a lot of switching around/wardrobe changes in the middle. “Help I’m Alive” has been playing for a while on the radio, and you can download an acoustic version of that on their site as well.

I only really got into Metric with their previous release Live It Out, but now I’ve gone back to some of their earlier albums (Grow Up and Blow Away and Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?), and I can pretty easily say that Fantasies is one of my most-anticipated releases currently on the horizon. Hope they announce some tour dates near me soon.

EDIT:

Here’s a video that shows the filming in splitscreen.

  1. But how do I know they didn’t use computer effects and then shoot the split screen with the same effects? Not convincing.

It’s girl music but the singers got nice legs.

  2. I like it. Sort of reminds me of a Spike Jonze video. The music is catchy too. Wouldn’t want to listen all day long, but it’s good.

  3. I’ve been a fan of Metric (an Emily Haines by proxy) for years now. They’ve yet to disappoint me and I’d be stunned if Fantasies is anything less then great.

  4. Matt, I can’t seem to get into Emily Haines’ solo stuff. I love her songs with Broken Social Scene, but I listened to one of the solo albums, and…I dunno. I think it’s that her breathy voice combined with Metric’s (or BSS’s) driving instrumentation makes a good counterpoint; when she doesn’t have Metric’s backing, it’s all just too mellow and for me.

I pre-ordered Fantasies from ilovemetric.com the other day and got the immediate digital download – it’s fantastic. You should definitely pick it up. I’ve now got all four albums on shuffle/repeat, and am in heaven. :)

  5. I picked up the album on Thursday on your recommendation. It’s pretty good. Realized I actually had their other records and never listened. Ha.

  6. I’ve owned… and sold back! two Metric albums. They have all the elements I like in a dance rock band, but seriously, they have no personality as a band, and are just a tamer Yeah Yeah Yeahs…

YYY btw, have a much better. much much better, new album.

In Toronto today I couldnt shop at my favorite record store because they took up an entire floor for an autograph session. 9th graders lined around the block.

    Lame.

  7. Yeah, I heard the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ new album is pretty awesome. And I can see the “Metric as tamer YYY” argument, too. I just like Emily’s voice a whole lot better than Karen O’s (except on Maps, which I love to pieces)…I can only listen to the YYY when I’m angry or driving very fast. And pretty much once through an album and I’m done. They’re just a little too manic for me most of the time. Except on Maps. And sometimes Pin. As you can see, I actually don’t have the album between “Fever to Tell” and “It’s Blitz!” either.

  9. “they’re just a little too manic for me most of the time. Except on Maps. And sometimes Pin.”

the new album is both much more of an aggressive feel-like-a-badass pop album and much more of a sensitive tearjerker kind of sentimental album. its definitely worth checking out even if you’re only a mild YYY fan.

Anyways, to date these are the best albums I’ve heard all year

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz!
Animal Collective – Meriweather Post Pavillion
    Mastodon – Crack the Skye
Fever Ray (girl from the Knife) – s/t

and while its too early to tell, Bat for Lashes’ new one may be way up there as well

check these out (the second is from her previous album):

  10. wtf happened to my post? stuff on R3 just randomly disappears…

  11. Aw, quit yer whining, Goon. If you’re on a computer using a different IP than usual, your comment has to be approved the very first time you comment. Which I just approved. How dare you insinuate that we censor, peasant.

By the way, Regina Spektor’s voice makes me melt. So adorably sexy.

  12. I’m not using a new computer, I’d be surprised if i had a different IP unless Cogeco is using dynamic IPs now.

    Comment by Goon — April 11, 2009

  13. and I never insinuated anything about censorship, thou fool! I just said things randomly disappear – I assumed it was a glitch. if I thought it was censorship I would not have used the word ‘random’

And its an annoying one if so. Shit disappears all the time.

  16. I’ve flipflopped into favor of Metric. I am not big on their other albums, they felt like a lot of filler in between the ‘hits’, however I listened to the new one eventually and its a much stronger effort from beginning to end. I ended up buying it. Bought it cheap, but bought it nonetheless.
